about

This song is a story of Ed's relationship with his son, Abe. Abe wrote this song while his father was in the middle of his battle with lung cancer. It was one of the first songs that Sweet Radish played together as well and found that it was not an easy song to play live due to the diverse timing and phrasing that made it confusing when playing with other musicians. Over the years, Abe forgot some of the lyrics to this song and when they started recording this album he couldn't remember what they were and so he wrote some new verses. Then suddenly during the very first recording session the original words came back to Abe, it was the bridge or second chorus of the song. This recording thus is a combination of a song written in 2010 and new verses written in 2020 making something unique in the process. Ed has children from three individual marriages but this never stopped all of his children to gather together. The track art is an image of Ed with his children and wife at their home in Crestone Colorado. Ultimately, Ed lived a unique life and so it is appropriate for his song to be unique as well.

lyrics

WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG,
YOU LEFT THE CITY FOR OKLAHOMA
YOU SOON FOUND OUT,
COLORADO WAS MUCH BETTER FOR YA

CITY BOY, NEW YORK BREAD,
YOU LEFT THE SMOG BEHIND
TO FIND A CLEARER HEAD

BEFORE YOU MET MY MOTHER,
YOU HAD THREE DIFFERENT WIVES
THREE OTHER CHILDREN
THREE OTHER LIVES

SHE KNEW YOU’D BE MY DADA,
RIGHT FROM THE START
IT MIGHT HAVE SCARED YOU
BUT YOU FOLLOWED YOUR HEART

CH:
I DON'T KNOW WHY I GOT SO LUCKY
I DON'T KNOW WHY I GOT THE BEST OF YOU
ALL I KNOW IS ILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
REMEMBER THE THINGS YOU TAUGHT ME…..

YOU TOLD ME TO SING,
EVEN IF I WAS OUT OF KEY
JUST BELIEVE IN YOURSELF,
AND YOU'LL HAVE WHAT YOU NEED

LIKE A LEAF IN THE WIND,
YOU BLEW ACROSS THE LAND
WE ALWAYS KNEW,
YOU WERE A TRAVELIN' MAN

FROM MEXICO TO FLORIDA
TEXAS TO L.A.
YOU SHOWED US THE WORLD
AND SHOWED US HOW TO PLAY

CH
I DON'T KNOW WHY I GOT SO LUCKY
I DON'T KNOW WHY I GOT THE BEST OF YOU
ALL I KNOW IS ILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
REMEMBER THE THINGS YOU TAUGHT ME…..

WE PLAYED MUSIC TOGETHER
AS HAPPY AS COULD BE
UNTIL AGE CAUGHT UP WITH YOU
AND CANCER BROKE YOUR STINGS

THE YEAR OF THE RABBIT,
WAS THE BEGINNING AND THE END
YOU TOUCHED MANY LIVES
AND YOU HAD MANY FRIENDS

I SCATTERED YOUR ASHES
AND FINGER BONES TOO
BUT I'LL NEVER FORGET
JUST PLAYING TUNES WITH YOU

CH
I DON'T KNOW WHY I GOT SO LUCKY
I DON'T KNOW WHY I GOT THE BEST OF YOU
ALL I KNOW IS I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
REMEMBER THE THINGS YOU TAUGHT ME…..

Long Lost BRIDGE:
YOU TAUGHT ME HOW TO SING AND PLAY
YOU SHOWED ME THE WORLD
YOU SAID MONEY DOESN'T MAKE A HAPPY MAN
THATS DEEP DOWN INSIDE
LISTEN TO YOUR HEART AND DO THE BEST YOU CAN
I LOVE YOU
I LOVE YOU
